Why Your Headaches Keep Coming Back
Headaches! Why do we get them, and how do we get rid of them?
If you suffer from headaches, you’ve probably done some research and realized there are TONS of different types of headaches. Tension headaches, sinus headaches, cluster headaches, complex migraines, the list goes on and on.
This post is about a type of headache that most people have never heard of, but it is OVERWHELMINGLY the most common headache I see in my clinic. It’s called a cervicogenic headache, and I’m about to tell you why the most common headache treatments DON’T WORK with this type of pain.
Cervicogenic means that the pain comes from a mechanical dysfunction the neck. Because of this, the pain may start in between the shoulders, at the base of the neck, and can even travel down the arms. The headache radiates up the neck, at the base of the skull, and over the head and can sometimes be painful behind the eyes. It’s usually made worse with movement of the head and neck or awkward positioning of the neck.
So because this is a mechanical problem, you must have a mechanical solution as part of your treatment plan. Otherwise, the underlying cause is never addressed.
My patients tell me all the time that before seeing us, they’ve tried prescription drugs, supplements, over the counter remedies, even injections for their pain. Now while these might provide some short-term relief, they’re just not meant to be a long term solution. Until that mechanical issue is fixed, those headaches will KEEP COMING BACK .
Now these mechanical dysfunctions can be anything from arthritis, a bulged or herniated disc, or even a simple misalignment called a subluxation. Anything that changes the way the joints articulate can cause this headache.
